WELCOME TO THE PERCUIL SAILING CLUB WEBSITE
Nestled in the heart of the Roseland Peninsular, Percuil sailing club is a small, friendly club with a proud sailing history.
PSC hold one of the best loved and well attended regattas in the Falmouth Bay area each season during August and various other events and activities throughout the year.
The beautiful, easily accessible and sheltered Percuil River is a fantastic place to get young sailors out on the water. We make good use of this fantastic situation by running a series of Junior Taster Sessions each Spring which are always well attended and have been a starting point for many avid sailors over the years.
We also organise a racing series open to all members which takes place every week on Friday evenings during the summer months, with club boats available for competent members to use by arrangement.
This website aims to provide you with up to date information and advice on Percuil Sailing Club activities and events. Please visit the site regularly to keep up to date with the latest news and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
A few words from our Commodore
PERCUIL SAILING CLUB COMMODORE'S REPORT 2012
Welcome to the 2012 Season with Percuil Sailing Club. At last we have had a taste of spring weather and our thoughts are turning to the coming season and re-colonising the beach and river at Percuil.
Your Committee have continued to work hard throughout the year, to keep the club active and attractive to both new and existing members and we shall continue, with enthusiasm, to ensure Percuil Sailing Club continues to offer a friendly and successful club.
Your current committee members are:
Hilary Newton – Secretary
Nicky Armstrong – Junior sailing Secretary (Temporary)
Jo Hawkins – Membership Secretary and Regatta catering manager
Bruce Dalgleish – Club Boson
Sheena Forrester
Gerry Beddoes
Silvia Ingham – Club regalia
Barbara and John Douglass
We were all greatly saddened by the loss of our Club President, Betty Richards, who passed away last year. Betty was an honorary life member and President of PSC and we shall all remember her enthusiasm and love of Percuil. We had missed Betty’s help at our recent regattas due to her ill health; however, we will always remember her as a key member of our club, instrumental in helping to deliver a well organised and enjoyable club. We have decided to further remember Betty by mounting a memorial plate onto our club hut.
I’m sure we are all wishing for a better start than last year, which unfortunately offered unkind weather early on and hindered our attempts to run a full year of activities, as hoped and planned. The Junior Sailing programme was the worst affected. In fact, we were only able to run two of the five sessions, which was extremely disappointing for all involved, particularly for the children who had signed up. Your Committee felt this to be a good reason, to refund all fees for this training and hope that the participants will return and rejoin for another try this year. Once the weather changed its mind and finally decided to become a little more summery, we were able to run our BBQ on the beach, followed by a trip up the river on two of the member’s cruising yachts.
Friday night racing was also disappointing last season; again affected by that dreaded weather. However, we have planned some changes and improvements for this coming year. We shall be running the Junior Sailing sessions on Friday evenings instead of on Saturdays and Sundays, along with some additional adult sail and motor boat training. Our hope is to help young and not so young sailors to then carry on sailing on Fridays, within the racing fleet, should they so wish. My thanks to our volunteer Race Officers, for their continued support and for providing the cover and organisation for these Friday evening sessions. The 2012 evening sessions and junior sailing sessions will begin on Friday 18th May and then Friday racing will continue through to the Regatta in August.
Our feature event of the sailing year is of course our annual Regatta. Last year, the weather was really kind with very good winds and clear skies. Entries were good, with 87 boats, which included Windsurfers, Oppies, Picos, Lasers, Gaffers, a fantastic fleet of Ajax and Sunbeams and handicap cruisers. This was a superb sight for our spectators, supported by a lively running commentary from Maggie; our thanks once again go to Maggie for providing this.
Our thanks as ever go to Greg, Carol, Iain and Linda from Percuil boat yard, for their continued support of our Club and Regatta along with the loan of the bottom shed on Regatta day. Jo Hawkins and her team pulled out the stops once again and delivered all of the refreshments. Additional funds were also raised by the raffle, arranged by Sylvia Ingham and assisted by Barbara Douglass. We really appreciate all of the efforts made by all of our helpers who rallied to deliver a really enjoyable event.
I am delighted to report that the 2011 Regatta contributed £1035 to our funds, of which our club has donated £250 to the R.N.L.I. A big well done and thanks to all involved.
We will soon be planning this year’s Regatta which will again be held during the Bank Holiday weekend, on Sunday 26th August, to form the Roseland Regatta weekend with Portscatho. We look forward to good weather and record entries. All are welcome to take part, spectate and help out on the day. Please encourage your friends and family to come along and experience one of the favourite village regattas in the Fal estuary.
I remind all of our members that the club offers a fleet of dinghies, available for your enjoyment. Some rules apply before their use and Bruce Dalgleish (Bosun Bruce) is your contact. He will be very happy to hear from any members wishing to take these craft out on the River. Bruce’s contact details are below.
Our aim continues with the philosophy of offering a welcoming and sociable club, where all levels of sailors can enjoy Percuil. We will continue to support our young sailors and arrange social occasions for our members. One of our targets for the coming Olympic year, will be to increase the interest in our club, in the hope to increase our membership.
We remain financially viable and this year’s finalised and independently audited accounts are available within the Treasurers Report. Our thanks go to Jo Hawkins for arranging for these to be prepared.
Finally, I thank all of our Committee members for their continued support and dedication. Hilary has again guided us efficiently as our Secretary, enabling us to cover a great deal of business, both in and between scheduled meetings. Hilary has asked to hand over the post as Secretary following this season, after looking after us all for many years; any willing volunteers for this post will be most welcome. In fact your Committee are always looking for willing members, who may wish to join and contribute to the club’s organisation.
I shall always be delighted to hear from club members, please feel free to contact me directly should you wish and I urge members to re-join and support our Club.
With my best wishes
David Armstrong
